Sep 13 (Field Level Media) – The Seattle Mariners set a franchise record for largest victory margin as well as season bests for runs and hits in a 19-1 rout of the Athletics on Saturday night in West Sacramento, Calif.
Cole Young homered and drove in five runs and Randy Arozarena went deep and had four RBIs for the Mariners. Among their 23 hits were rookie Michael Arroyo’s first major league homer and home runs for Dominic Canzone and J.P. Crawford.
Weston Wilson had a career-best five hits while Young, Arroyo (three RBIs), Josh Naylor and Julio Rodriguez had three hits apiece for Seattle. Right- hander Bryan Woo (12-9) continued his mastery against the Athletics by allowing one unearned run and three hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked two to improve to 9-1 in 12 career starts against the A’s.
The Athletics lost for just the third time in 10 games. All-Star Shea Langeliers (knee) was activated prior to the game and went 1-for-3 with the lone RBI. Gage Jump (6-11) gave up five runs and five hits over two innings.
Mets 12, Yankees 2
Francisco Lindor, Luis Torrens and rookie Carson Benge homered off Gerrit Cole, and the visiting Mets rolled to a 12-2 victory over the Yankees.
Lindor added a grand slam in the eighth as the Mets won for the fifth time in six games and improved to 22-13 since their big selloff at last month’s trade deadline by hitting Cole hard again. Rookie Zac Thornton (4-5) allowed two runs on five hits in a career-high-tying seven innings.
Cole was tagged for five runs on nine hits (three home runs) in 4 1/3 innings after allowing four homers in Sunday’s loss at San Diego. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter as he matched his second-shortest outing since returning from Tommy John surgery on May 22.
Tigers 11, Rockies 7
Hao-Yu Lee sparked a seven-run, eighth-inning rally with a double and capped it with a two-run triple as host Detroit beat struggling Colorado.
Lee had three hits, scored twice and drove in three runs. Max Clark supplied three hits while scoring a run and knocking in another, and Kevin McGonigle added a solo homer.
Hunter Goodman blasted a three-run homer for the Rockies, who have lost six straight. Tigers starter Andrew Sears gave up four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. Colorado starter Tanner Gordon allowed four runs and 10 hits in four innings.
Marlins 4, Dodgers 3
Graham Pauley slugged a two-run homer and Otto Lopez smacked a go-ahead RBI single in a three-run second inning as host Miami defeated Los Angeles to end the Dodgers’ eight-game winning streak.
The Marlins’ bullpen allowed just two hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings. Miami snapped a four-game losing skid. The Marlins are just 2-7 over their past nine games.
Max Muncy and Mookie Betts — each with a solo homer — led Los Angeles’ offense. Muncy has 28 dingers this season. Betts has 20. Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman returned to action after missing two games due to knee soreness. Freeman went 0-for-4.
Rays 3, Astros 2
Pinch hitter Nick Madrigal produced a tie-breaking sacrifice fly, Bryan Baker recorded his major league-leading 40th save and first-place Tampa Bay edged Houston in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Richie Palacios had a single and two RBIs while Victor Mesa singled, scored and walked twice as the Rays stretched their lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East to four games.
Starter Ian Seymour had a dominant stretch after allowing a run in the first inning but failed to win in his sixth straight appearance, five of them starts. The left-hander finished with two runs allowed on four hits over six innings. He whiffed 10 and walked one. Tyler Wells (5-2) followed Seymour with a scoreless seventh.
White Sox 6, Cardinals 5
Randal Grichuk hit a go-ahead two-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to help Chicago beat host St. Louis and snap a four-game losing streak.
Grichuk went deep with a 1-2 count against closer Riley O’Brien, taking a sinker just over the fence to the opposite field in right, with outfielder Victor Scott II also losing his glove over the fence. Grichuk’s 13th home run, against the team that brought him to the majors, trumped a tie-breaking solo shot by Cardinals rookie Leo Bernal against Grant Taylor in the bottom of the eighth.
Another former Cardinals player, right-hander Jordan Hicks (3-2), walked a batter but also got one out for the victory. Bryan Hudson got three outs for his eighth save.
Rangers 6, Diamondbacks 2
Wyatt Langford hit a 435-foot homer to open a six-run fifth inning, Elias Diaz had three hits and an RBI, and Texas beat Arizona in Phoenix to even their three-game series.
Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, activated from the injured list Saturday, gave up one run over 2 2/3 innings of relief in his first appearance since Aug. 7, though he did not factor in the decision.
Brandon Nimmo had two doubles and an RBI, and Josh Jung had two hits and an RBI for Texas. Jung was also activated from the injured list Saturday. Langford added a double.
Cubs 4, Pirates 3
Nico Hoerner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to force in the go-ahead run as Chicago pulled out a victory over visiting Pittsburgh.
Pedro Ramirez had a double and a home run, and Michael Busch hit a solo shot for the Cubs. Ryan Rolison (9-1) allowed one hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Ryan Zeferjahn struck out Bryan Reynolds looking for the final out and his sixth save.
Ryan O’Hearn hit a three-run home run, and Paul Skenes allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings for the Pirates.
Braves 12, Phillies 2
Michael Harris II and Ronald Acuna Jr. each homered and right-hander Tyler Mahle produced another strong start to lead Atlanta to a win over visiting Philadelphia, clinching the three-game series.
The Braves now hold a six-game lead over the two-time division champion Phillies in the National League East. Harris was 4-for-5 with a three-run homer, his 25th, and two runs. Acuna was 3-for-3 with a home run and a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. Mahle (6-10) matched his season high by pitching seven innings and allowed one run on six hits.
Tim Mayza was Philadelphia’s replacement starter for Jesus Luzardo, who had to be skipped because of shoulder soreness. It was the fifth time the left-hander had been used as an opener. He pitched three scoreless innings with two hits before being lifted.
Brewers 13, Reds 9
Garrett Mitchell’s bat remained scorching hot as the Milwaukee center fielder went 4-for-5 with four RBIs, helping the host Brewers break a record as they defeated Cincinnati.
Mitchell, who went 3-for-5 with a grand slam Friday, got all four hits in the first five innings, with a two-run homer in the first, and a two-run double that capped a five-run fifth. Cooper Pratt doubled while going 3-for-5, while Brice Turang (2-for-4) and William Contreras also homered in the win.
Juan Brito (3-for-4) hit his second home run and drove in three for the Reds, who lost their fifth straight. Eugenio Suarez hit his 23rd home run as part of a 3-for-4 night with three runs scored and two RBIs, and JJ Bleday broke an 0-for-20 streak with a 2-for-5 performance that included two runs scored and an RBI.
Red Sox 5, Royals 1
Ranger Suarez tossed his second straight seven-inning start and Boston scored in its final three at-bats en route to a win over visiting Kansas City.
Suarez (7-4) struck out eight, scattered five hits and allowed one run while completing his seven frames in 96 pitches as the Red Sox snapped their three- game losing streak. Roman Anthony, Adley Rutschman and Nick Sogard each had multiple hits while Wilyer Abreu hit a two-run double that gave Boston a sixth-inning lead it would not relinquish.
Carter Jensen’s 24th home run of the season marked the only scoring for the Royals, who opened the series with a win Friday.
Blue Jays 7, Orioles 3
Alejandro Kirk belted a two-run home run and had three RBIs to help Toronto defeat visiting Baltimore.
The teams have split the first two of the three-game series in their pursuit of an American League playoff spot. The Blue Jays are one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final AL wild-card spot. The Orioles are three behind. Brett Bateman added a solo shot for Toronto.
Kyle Bradish (7-14) allowed five runs and eight hits in three innings for Baltimore.
Padres 7, Giants 6
Jackson Merrill and Fernando Tatis Jr. hit home runs, Michael King overcame a shaky start to complete seven innings, and San Diego overcame host San Francisco for a sixth consecutive win.
Dustin Harris drove in three runs and Xander Bogaerts had four hits for the Padres, who now sit a game and a half ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the third and final National League wild-card playoff spot.
Giants starter Cesar Perdomo (0-1) couldn’t finish the fifth, having allowed five runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings. King (11-9) was pulled with a 7-3 lead after the seventh, having set down 16 of the final 18 batters he faced. He was charged with three runs on five hits, striking out four and walking none.
Nationals 6, Angels 5
Harry Ford drove in the winning run with an infield grounder and Washington survived another blown save to beat visiting Los Angeles.
With one out, Daylen Lile was intentionally walked by Jose Fermin (4-3). Runners CJ Abrams and Lile executed a double steal and, with the infield in, Angels shortstop Zach Neto booted Ford’s grounder and Abrams scored the winning run. Jack Sinclair (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win.
Los Angeles trailed 4-0 entering the eighth but scored three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth as the Nationals added to their major league record with their 39th blown save of the season. Andres Chaparro singled in Jose Tena to tie the game in the ninth.
Twins 4, Guardians 3
Emmanuel Rodriguez hit a home run in his first big-league plate appearance and Minnesota held on for a win over Cleveland in Minneapolis.
Royce Lewis went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Twins, who also got RBIs from Kody Clemens and Victor Caratini, all in Minnesota’s four-run third inning. Twins left-hander Connor Prielipp (5-7) picked up his second victory in his past three starts, giving up three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings,
Travis Bazzana finished 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Guardians, who dropped to 1 1/2 games behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central. Steven Kwan and Brayan Rocchio each drove in a run. Franco Aleman (0-1) was pelted for four runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning.
