My Mother in Law Lisa Palmer has had more strength in this past 6 months than I’ve gathered in my lifetime. She works at Tyson, which through the pandemic was considered essential. While there they had hundreds diagnosed with Covid and she watched some of her closest coworkers die while required to report to work. Then, in November – the weekend before Thanksgiving she herself became sick. Simultaneously so did her husband. They spent the week of Thanksgiving away from family, quarantined and as days went on my father in law, Tony, became more ill. On Black Friday, after not being able to get out of bed and slowly finding his breathing became more difficult he (the most hard-headed man I know) asked to go to the ER. From there he spent 16 days in the ICU. We got positive news, hope, and hours later downhill turns. This was repeated and on a Saturday while making Christmas cookies to bring to him as he was about to be allowed visitors we didn’t know what would happen just one day later. We needed to come now and say goodbye. At 1:30 AM Sunday December 14th his children were by his side when they turned off life support. My mother in law was just feet away already realizing the burden that now fell on her shoulders. She never had to do anything. Her husband was the breadwinner but he also knew every password to every account and when and who to pay when each bill came due. For two months she fought with companies to help her save his truck, her utilities and keep her daughter in college. Through it all she blamed herself for what happened to him. Was it her and her “essential” job that brought him the deadly virus? She realized the home she was in had to be sold. She had to downsize. She couldn’t do life on her own without him, not only physically, but with everything that she didn’t even know she needed to not be in charge of. Tomorrow she closes on a new, smaller house. She has overcome all odds in becoming the strong and independent woman she didn’t think she’d have to be. Lisa is so strong. She deserves more than flowers, but I’m telling you there is nobody that would appreciate them more than she would. Please consider her for your hero. And she is NOT to blame to for what happened to Tony. God just needed that man more than the world did at that moment.
Hear what happens when we surprise Lisa on moving day into her new home.
