Joshua Baez became the first player in major league history to hit three home runs in his debut, helping lead the visiting St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday afternoon.
Baez hit homers to right, center and left field in his first three at-bats, driving in five runs as St. Louis won its third game in four tries. He became the 11th Cardinals hitter to homer in his first career at-bat, and the 33rd to homer on the first career pitch he faced in the majors.
Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy (5-9) earned his first win since July 8, tossing six innings of three-run (none earned), five-hit ball, striking out six and walking two. Cubs starter Matthew Boyd (8-2) lost his first game since March 26. The veteran left-hander allowed seven runs on five hits across 5 1/3 frames, walking three and striking out a pair.
Michael Conforto hit a three-run homer for Chicago, which had won nine of its previous 11 games. Blaze Jordan and Alec Burleson also homered for St. Louis.
Brewers 4, Dodgers 1
Jacob Misiorowski went six strong innings, Joey Ortiz and William Contreras hit two-run home runs and visiting Milwaukee evened the season series against Los Angeles.
The long ball offense was plenty for Misiorowski (12-5), who gave up one run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts. The National League Cy Young Award favorite now has a 1.75 ERA. The season series will be decided in Sunday’s finale of a four-game series.
Shohei Ohtani had an RBI triple, while left-hander Justin Wrobleski (11-5) gave up four runs on four hits over six innings. After earning a spot on the NL All-Star team, Wrobleski has allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last four starts.
White Sox 4, Tigers 3
Andrew Benintendi drove in the go-ahead run and visiting Chicago held on for a win over Detroit.
Benintendi had two hits and scored a run. Colson Montgomery drove in two and Braden Montgomery knocked in the other for the White Sox, who lead the Tigers by 4 1/2 games in the American League Central. Jordan Hicks (2-1) tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Bryan Hudson got the last three outs for his fifth save.
Eduardo Valencia homered and drove in two runs and Gleyber Torres supplied three hits and drove in the Tigers’ third run.
Blue Jays 4, Yankees 1
Charles McAdoo doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and Toronto defeated visiting New York.
McAdoo also had an RBI single in a two-run eighth as Toronto clinched the three-game series by winning the first two. Spencer Miles (5-2) pitched around a single with the aid of a caught stealing in the seventh. Louis Varland struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 28th save.
Brent Headrick (6-2) allowed the tiebreaking run in the seventh. Yankees starter Cam Schlittler allowed one run on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. George Lombard Jr. drove in New York’s run with a single in the second.
Orioles 4, Rays 3 (10 innings)
Tyler O’Neill singled in Colton Cowser in the 10th inning as Baltimore won its second straight one-run affair against American League East-leading Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Baltimore reliever Cam Sanders whiffed Richie Palacios in an eight-pitch at-bat with two runners on to notch his second save in two nights and third overall. Pete Alonso was 3-for-5 with a homer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand ripped a solo shot. Starter Kyle Bradish yielded two runs on seven hits.
Jonathan Aranda went 3-for-5, while Chandler Simpson and Yandy Diaz had two hits apiece for Tampa Bay. Starter Ian Seymour fanned nine in six innings but surrendered three runs on six hits. Closer Bryan Baker (1-1) gave up the game-winning hit against his former team.
Guardians 6, Padres 1
Joey Cantillo and three relievers combined to allow just one hit as Cleveland snapped San Diego’s six-game winning streak.
Cantillo (9-7) held the Padres hitless after allowing Jake Cronenworth’s single in the first inning. Colin Holderman, Hunter Gaddis and Erik Sabrowski followed by combining to throw three hitless innings to seal the 10,000th victory in Cleveland franchise history.
Jo Adell, Patrick Bailey and Steven Kwan each doubled in a run for Cleveland. Adell, Kwan and Chase DeLauter each had two hits. The Guardians recorded 11 hits and dealt the Padres just their fifth loss in their last 21 games.
Mets 5, Nationals 4
Francisco Lindor had the walk-off RBI single as host New York scored twice in the ninth inning to edge Washington in the middle game of a three-game series.
The Mets left two runners on in the eighth before surging back against Yovanny Cruz (0-1), who got just one out in the ninth. Jefry Yan (1-0) retired all five batters he faced as New York improved to 8-3 since the trade deadline. Carson Benge homered for the Mets.
Brady House put the Nationals ahead with a three-run homer in the sixth. Andres Chaparro delivered a solo shot in the fourth while Jacob Young finished with two hits for Washington, which fell to 5-9 this month. Will Dion struck out seven and allowed just one walk over 4 1/3 innings of relief work.
Marlins 8, Reds 4
Heriberto Hernandez hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth to lift visiting Miami to a comeback victory over Cincinnati.
Jakob Marsee was 4-for-4 with a solo home run, while Joe Mack went 3-for-5 with a solo shot as Miami snapped a four-game road skid and evened the three-game set. Miami starter Ryan Gusto allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
For the Reds, Matt McLain was 3-for-4 with a double and a homer, Ke’Bryan Hayes also homered and Sal Stewart had two hits, including a two-run single. Reds starter Brady Singer scattered eight hits, allowing three runs with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings.
Mariners 10, Astros 5
Emerson Hancock matched his career high by working seven innings, and Seattle rode a four-run second inning to a victory over host Houston.
Hancock (7-7) snapped a three-start skid, surrendering two runs on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Brendan Donovan (3-for-5, three RBIs) and Cole Young (3-for-5, homer, four RBIs) posted big nights, while Victor Robles hit a two-run triple.
Houston starter Hayden Wesneski (2-1) gave up five runs on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts over four innings, marking his shortest outing of the season. Isaac Paredes (3-for-4, two RBIs) slugged a two-run shot and Christian Vazquez ripped a solo homer.
Phillies 9, Twins 1
Bryson Stott slapped a three-run homer to cap a seven-run fifth inning, and Alec Bohm delivered a career-high five hits for Philadelphia in a win against Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Bryce Harper contributed two hits and scored a run, and Edmundo Sosa and J. T. Realmuto drove in two runs each for Philadelphia. Jesus Luzardo (11-5) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run and scattering seven hits while striking out nine. Trea Turner limped off in the eighth after fouling a pitch off his right knee.
Luke Keaschall had two hits on his 24th birthday and Kaelen Culpepper also had two hits for the Twins, who fell to 4-9 this month. Rookie Connor Prielipp (3-6) was tagged for a career-high eight runs and eight hits in five innings.
Red Sox 4, Pirates 0
Sonny Gray threw seven scoreless innings and Wilyer Abreu’s second-inning solo home run put Boston on course for a shutout of host Pittsburgh.
Gray (15-3) set a career-high for wins and leads the American League in that category. Gray struck out seven and walked one to lead Boston to its second win in three games following a five-game skid. Andruw Monasterio doubled in two insurance runs in a three-run ninth.
Abreu’s home run with one out in the second off Pirates starter Jared Jones (2-5) was one of his three hits. It tarnished a solid start for Jones, who struck out seven, walked two and gave up just one run on four hits over five innings.
Diamondbacks 10, Braves 3
Eduardo Rodriguez pitched six strong innings and Nolan Arenado hit a pair of home runs to help visiting Arizona defeat Atlanta, clinching the three-game series as well as the season series.
Rodriguez (12-4), who settled down after giving up two first-inning runs, allowed five hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk. Arenado, who was 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs and four RBIs, hit a two-run homer in the third inning and a solo shot in the seventh, giving him 20 for the season.
Ronald Acuna Jr. led off with a 429-foot home run to center field for the Braves, his 13th. It was his 199th career home run and 40th leadoff homer. Grant Holmes (7-5) lost for the first time since June 22. He worked 3 2/3 innings and allowed six runs — matching his career high — on six hits and three walks while striking out three.
Angels 1, Royals 0
Reid Detmers allowed two hits and struck out 11 over eight shutout innings and Nolan Schanuel had three hits and drove in the winning run in the eighth as Los Angeles edged Kansas City in Anaheim, Calif.
It was the first home win in 22 starts for Detmers (4-8), who entered the contest tied with Kutter Crawford and Alex Cobb for the most consecutive home starts without a win in American League history (21). It also snapped Detmers’ nine-start winless streak.
Nate Pearson (2-1) took the loss for the Royals, who have lost five of six. He gave up the game’s lone run on one hit and one walk in one inning. Kansas City wasted a strong start from Randy Dobnak, who allowed four hits,and struck out six over 5 2/3 innings.
Rangers 5, Athletics 3
Wyatt Langford hit a go-ahead two-run homer as part of a 3-for-4 outing to lead the Texas to a victory over the Athletics at West Sacramento, Calif.
Corey Seager had two hits and one RBI and MacKenzie Gore (7-9) ended a four-start winless stretch for Texas, which halted a four-game losing streak. Jacob Latz recorded a two-inning save as the Rangers moved back into the final wild-card spot in the tight AL race. Gore gave up three runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Henry Bolte went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer for the Athletics, who lost for the 16th time in the past 20 contests. Alika Williams had two hits for the A’s, who have dropped nine of their last 10 home games. J.T. Ginn (8-7) allowed four runs and eight hits over six innings.
Giants 7, Rockies 1
Logan Webb coasted after getting supported by a six-run fourth inning, including a home run by Drew Gilbert, and San Francisco squared its home series against Colorado at a game apiece.
Gilbert finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a career-high-tying three RBIs for the Giants, who would have moved into a last-place tie with the Rockies in the National League West with a third straight defeat. The victory gave Webb a winning record for the first time this season. He’s now 12-4 lifetime against Colorado — four more wins than he’s recorded against any other opponent.
Connor Norby had the only extra-base hit for Colorado, a double. The Rockies were out-hit 10-5. Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen (3-11) was charged with six runs in 3 2/3 innings, serving up four hits and three walks. He struck out one.
