Australian icons come together in the video for Troye Sivan’s new song.
The song is called “She’s the Best” and is the title track of his new album, due out Oct. 9; you can preorder it now. For the video, Troye tapped Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, who’s also from Down Under.
According to a release, the video is inspired by “the spirit of 1980s queer New York.” It shows Kidman exiting a car and strutting into a club, walking through the backstage area where drag performers are getting ready for a show. Then she’s sitting in the audience, watching Troye as he stands onstage in the club crooning, “That girl, that girl, wow, that girl, she’s the best, best.”
Kidman approaches Troye onstage at the end of the clip and they share a sexy embrace. In between, there are multiple scenes of women, trans women and drag queens showing off their styles, dancing, working and everything in between. Famed drag queen Sasha Colby also appears in the video.
According to the release, the song is “a celebration and a love letter, honoring the women – especially trans women – along with the drag queens, feminine-presenting people and the feminine spirit that has shaped [Troye’s] life, creativity and sense of self.”
“She’s the Best” was co-written and co-produced by Troye, Jack Antonoff and George Daniels, among others. Antonoff, of the bands fun. and Bleachers, has been a go-to producer for artists like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Sabrina Carpenter, Lorde and Phoebe Bridgers. Daniels is the drummer for The 1975; he’s married to Troye’s close friend and former tourmate Charli XCX.
Troye isn’t the only pop star who’s cast an acclaimed actress in a video recently: Demi Moore appears in the video for KATSEYE’s hit “Animal.”
