This is a cool idea, the Metro Nashville Police Department is looking for funding to help hire retired police officers to answer non-emergency calls.
The Alternative Police Response Unit was formed in 2022 and has about 50 retired officers in part-time positions answering calls. As of now, they answer about a fifth of the calls that come into the department and use their experience as police officers to assist. Read more about it HERE
