This holiday season, Pentatonix didn’t just do a Christmas tour and release a Christmas song: They also starred in the popular Netflix holiday movie Meet Me Next Christmas. But believe it or not, some viewers had no idea Pentatonix is an actual Grammy-winning act, and not just a group created for the film.
“We’ve seen a lot of comments on social media that are like, ‘Wait, these guys are a real group?'” Pentatonix member Mitch Grassi tells ABC Audio. “So it’s cool. It seems like the movie is actually reaching new people and we’re hopefully garnering some new fans, which is awesome.”
Meet Me Next Christmas stars Christina Milian as a woman who’s trying to get tickets to a sold-out Pentatonix concert so she can meet a guy there, and Devale Ellis as a concierge who’s helping her. You can probably guess what happens after that.
“I think Christina and Devale’s chemistry is just so beautiful, and their acting and the story,” says Pentatonix’s Scott Hoying, explaining the film’s popularity. “You really, like, earn the ending. And it’s about love, and I think we all want more of that in this world. And so it’s just so feel-good.”
As for their own acting — the group plays themselves, of course — Scott says they’re getting a bit more comfortable with it, having also appeared in last year’s holiday film Candy Cane Lane, as well as in the TV show Bones and the movie Pitch Perfect 2.
“I think acting is about getting out of your head and just being comfortable and confident in the moment, which we can do with each other ….you have all your best friends there, it’s like easier to do,” he notes. “But I feel like it was a step in the right direction.”
