We may be seeing a White Christmas this year after all, with a winter storm expected to come in late Thursday night bringing with it rain and snow for the holiday weekend. It’s been dipping below freezing several times already, but with the storm, we could get into the single digits, and that means trouble for our water pipes. Metro Water Services is gearing up for potential problems with additional crews ready to respond to emergencies.
Here are some tips from Metro Water Services (MWS) for keeping your pipes healthy in the cold weather:
- Wrap interior pipes
- Disconnect garden hoses and cover outdoor spigots
- Close vents in crawl spaces
- Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to move around the pipes
- Trickle water out of faucets to keep water moving
Additionally, to keep your heating system working through the cold weather, make sure your unit is free of leaves and debris and clean the gutters while you’re at it. Weatherstripping doors and windows will also help keep cold air out.
Of course, none of these methods are 100% foolproof, so if you do find yourself with some broken pipes, you can call MWS’s customer service line at 615-862-4600. They also have an outage map you can access online to see if your outage is already getting attention.
Merry Christmas, and we hope you have a safe one as well!
