- On Friday, a multibillion-dollar lawsuit was settled to allow colleges and universities to pay their athletes. Judge Claudia Wilken ruled that the NCAA will pay $2.8 billion in back damages to athletes who played college sports over the last ten years. For current and future athletes, university sports programs will be able to shell out up to $20.5 million per year for their players. The ruling is in addition to NCAA athletes being able to benefit from Name and Image Licensing deals for compensation.
- Nintendo hasn’t released official numbers, but three different sources are reporting that the company sold 3 million Nintendo Switch 2 units in its first 24 hours of being on sale. The previous record for first-day sales belonged to the PlayStation 4, moving more than one million consoles in its first 24 hours. mThe Switch 2 isn’t without controversy; GameStop is investigating claims that customers in New York were receiving damaged consoles after employees stapled receipts to the Switch 2 boxes, puncturing the screen. Resale scams are also popping up, with sites like Yahoo Auctions banning all Nintendo Switch 2 sales so gaming fans won’t get ripped off.
- The best of the Broadway stage were honored at Sunday night’s Tony Awards. The musical Maybe Happy Ending was the big winner of the night, taking home six awards, including Best Musical. Former Pussycat Dolls member Nicole Scherzinger won for Best Actress in a Musical for her role in Sunset Boulevard. Big names like George Clooney, Mia Farrow, and Bob Odenkirk were nominated but did not win. Here are some of the winners in the major categories:
