SHUTDOWN CONTINUES
It's Day 2 of the partial government shutdown. That means another day of closed national parks and national monuments, and no pay for thousands of so--called 'non-essential' government workers.

IF GOVT SHUTDOWN LASTS, COULD LEAD TO RECESSION
If the funding dispute keeps the federal government shutdown too long, the country could find itself in another recession. Former Treasury Department Chief of Staff Mark Patterson said that could happen if the stalemate lasts until the debt ceiling debate in about two weeks or if there is an issue having the debt ceiling raised.

PANDA CAM DOWN, TOO
It also means another day without the Smithsonian National Zoo's Panda Cam. Ellen DeGeneres is kind of leading the charge to get that back up and tweeted, "Panda cam down. Here's a video of a dog taking care of a baby, instead. You're welcome."

SHUTDOWN DOESN'T KEEP VETS FROM WWII MEMORIAL
The shutdown means national parks and memorials are closed. No workers to maintain them, accept admission fees, etcetera. But, that didn't stop a group of World War II Veterans from walking and wheeling around in their wheelchairs to look at the WWII memorial in Washington yesterday. The vets were on an Honor Flight from Mississippi. Honor flights use donations to pay for chaperoned daytrips for world war two vets to go see the memorials built in their honor. I'm glad they didn't have to miss it.

NEW FOODIE PLACE DOWNTOWN
At least we're still making progress, locally. Plans are full-steam-ahead for another big downtown Nashville project: another place you'll want to take the family when they come visit. It's a restaurant called "The Diner" and plans are for it to be open 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, on the corner of Third and Demonbreun where -- right now-- there's a vacant building

OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR HEALTHCARE CONTINUES TODAY
Open enrollment continues today for people trying to sign up at www.healthcare.gov for healthcare under the Obama administration's Affordable Care Act.  Online insurance exchanges kept crashing on their first day yesterday, getting bogged down with technical glitches or long load times because the internet traffic was so heavy. Don't panic. Just try again today. Or tomorrow. Or this weekend. You have time.

HEALTH: BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH: HOW TO CUT YOUR RISK
By now, probably everyone listening has known someone who had breast cancer. Do you realize though, that THESE days, we can actually say we know someone who HAD it, instead of someone who died from it.  BUT, we still need a cure. This is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Health experts encourage you to wear your pink, of course, to show support, put something on your facebook page if you want... that's great... but also, make sure you know at least one thing that YOU can do to cut your chances. Number one, lose some weight. We didn't know that was a factor for a long time. We do now.

You need a job? There are more job fairs today. One at the Goodwill Career center in Gallatin (670 Nashville Pike), from 9 to 1. It's Kelly Services Staffing agency hiring about 600 people for pick and pack positions for a Sumner County company.  Representatives from these companies will be on site and interviews are possible, so dress for success, bring your resume and ID. See other job fairs for today and the rest of this month HERE.

HOW TO GET ONE OF THOSE AMAZON.COM JOBS
You heard that Amazon.com is going to add 70-thousand seasonal workers this year? Well close to ten thousand of those will be here in MIddle tennessee. I just wanted to let you know so you can get your stuff together, and be ready to apply. There are job fairs set for next week, and I'll have the details for you ahead of time, so you can go apply.  Last year 7000 of those seasonal jobs turned into fulltime positions.

NASHVILLE WALK TO SCHOOL DAY
You may see more kids on the road this afternoon. Many Nashville Schools celebrated Walk to School day today, which means some of those kids will be walking back home this afternoon. It's supposed to encourage physical activity and highlight how important it is for Nashville to have good sidewalks, crosswalks and other infrastructure that encourages walking.

JEFFERSON STREET CLOSED, WATER MAIN BREAK
Jefferson St has been closed this morning because of a water main break. Metro Water has been working on it.

INSTEAD OF FUNERALS, FREEZE-DRYING?
Guess what may be the future of funerals? Freeze-drying. It's environmentally-friendly, no ashes like cremation creates, and after the body is freeze-dried, it's SHAKEN and turns to dust. Doesn't take up much space. They're already talking about it in Britain.

WOMAN WRITES HER OWN OBIT, ADDS GUILT-TRIP
Or, you may want to go the way this lady did. She wrote her own obituary. And in it, after she wrote how thankful she was for her friends, family, her loved ones, she added, "There will be no service, and no funeral. You should have visited me with kind attention when I was alive, and needed you... "

BIEBER: I'M TIRED, CARRY ME...
How many times have you done this? You're on vacation, you're walking around, you're EXHAUSTED ... and you'd give ANYTHING for someone to just carry you! Well, good for Justin Bieber that he actually has that! He was visiting the Great Wall of China when the 19 year apparently got fatigued, and photos tweeted on Bieber's twitter page show him being carried along on the shoulders of two big burly bodyguards. Ahh.. the good life.

NASHVILLE TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO HUGE POT BUST
Some excellent teamwork between Metro Police officer Thomas Spence and his canine partner, Caine, led to a HUGE pot seizure. Officer Spence stopped a white SUV for following a tractor-trailer too closely on I-40 east near Bellevue.  The driver, 43-year-old Benjamin Hampton, came up with some weird story that the cop didn't buy, about why he flew down here and was driving an SUV back home, so the officer asked for permission to check the vehicle. That's when his dog found 34 pounds of pot, being trafficked right through town. Hampton was arrested.

A-ROD'S DEFENSE IS THAT HE DIDN'T KNOW
Part of Alex Rodriguez's defense as he appeals his Biogenesis suspension is that he didn't know the substances he was taking were banned.  The "Daily News" reports the New York Yankees third baseman and his lawyers have built their case around the idea that "A-Rod" thought the drugs he got from Biogenesis were innocent legal supplements.

DUCK DYNASTY STARS HAVE THREE BOOKS ON THE BESTSELLER LIST, MORE ON THE WAY
Members of the Robertson family are becoming as bankable as authors as they are stars of "Duck Dynasty."
With three New York Times best-sellers already in print, Al Robertson's"Duck Commander Devotional" is set for release Oct. 15, Kay Robertson's "Miss Kay's Duck Commander Kitchen" is set to go on sale on Nov. 15, and on Monday, Howard Books said there'll be at least three new Robertson titles next year.       So far this year, Uncle Si Robertson's "Si-cology" and Phil's "Happy, Happy, Happy" remained No. 1 and No. 4, respectively, on the New York Times best-seller list last week, while Willie Robertson's and wife Korie's "The Duck Commander Family" spent much of the past year in the Top 10.
Al's upcoming devotional has presold 420,000 copies, while Miss Kay's cookbook begins with a print run of 400,000.
Howard books' rep says, "If you look how the current books are trending it's amazing. There are three books from the same family each with 1 million in print. Nowadays in publishing, that's astronomical."

FUNNY WAY TO ANNOUNCE PREGNANCY... USING SPAGHETTI SAUCE
What is the FUNNIEST way to announce you are PREGNANT? In a tweet from an NFL Football Player, Torey Smith, of the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, there's a photo of him and his woman, eating spaghetti, and a jar of PREGO spaghetti sauce on the table between them. Over the name "Prego" they've added a piece of paper that says, "we're." She has spaghetti in her mouth, he looks stunned! Very cute.
