GOVERNMENT PARTIAL SHUTDOWN OVER
Hundreds of thousands of federal employees are going back to work this morning, and more than a million others who have been working without pay will see paychecks again.  Last night's House and Senate votes on the deal to fund government and raise the debt ceiling, and President Obama's signature on the agreement, ended the 16-day shutdown and gave the Treasury authority to borrow money to pay the nation's debts.
The legislation that was passed funds government operations through mid-January, and extends the federal debt limit into early February.

COST OF THE SHUTDOWN
The total cost of the federal government shutdown has yet to be determined, but Standard and Poor's believes one-and-a-half-billion-dollars a day is a good place to start.  The financial analysts estimate the stand off cost the recovering economy about 24-billion dollars and shaved six-tenths of a percent off the nation's fourth-quarter GDP growth.

GREAT SHAKEOUT EARTHQUAKE DRILL ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR TENNESSEE
Most of the people who study these sorts of things agree that Tennessee is at risk of a REALLY big earthquake within the next 50 years:  a quake that would make bridges fall, roads buckle, cause waves from lakes that crash 30 feet up onto the shore, and flood thousands of homes and businesses. Yet most of us have never, even once, taken part in an earthquake drill.
Today is called the Great ShakeOut, where experts ask us to take ONE minute sometime today to practice: DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON. And teach your kids that, "DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON."

TENNESSEE MAN WHO CRIES BLOOD FIGURING OUT WAYS TO COPE
My heart just breaks for this guy. A 29-year-old Antioch man, who cries blood. And he's having to try to find ways to cope, as doctors are stumped by his medical condition. Michael Spann says blood not only comes from his eyes, but sometimes his nose and mouth. It's such a horrifying sight that he says it's kept him from working or attending college and it's made him reclusive.  BUT, Michael says he's started connecting with other patients with the same rare condition. His doctors say it can't hurt. Spann and other patients don't feel so isolated, and it may eventually help doctors come up with a diagnosis.

MEN REALLY DO TRANSFER LOVE TO THEIR CARS
That commercial showing a man's car as his "baby" may not be far off the mark. Men who are unlucky in love often transfer that angst to their cars. That is, they fall in love with the car and show it all the signs of love -- gazing at it, caressing it, admiring it and touching it. It's called "material possession love," according to researchers from the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University. They found that people seemed to use their attachment to cars to remedy pain and disappointment in their romantic lives. "Material possession relationships may reduce the negative consequences of social isolation and loneliness and can contribute to consumer well-being, especially when considered relative to less-desirable alternative responses like substance abuse, delinquency and the side-effects of anti-depressant medications," said Nancy Sirianni, assistant marketing professor. The study findings were published in the Journal of Consumer Research.
