NEW POPE FIRST FROM AMERICAS
The new leader of the Roman Catholic Church is the first Pope from the Americas. Cardinals surprised many yesterday by voting Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio [[ bair-GOH-lee-oh ]] of Argentina as the 266th Pope. He took the name of Pope Francis, and addressed a massive crowd in St. Peter's Square. In his first address as Pope, Francis asked the thousands gathered in St. Peter's Square to "pray to the Lord so that he blesses me" and then he offered a blessing to them.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE NEW POPE
Pope Francis is 76-years-old, the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and the first person from the Americas-- in this case South America -- to become the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Francis is known to be conservative: opposing abortion and gay marriage, and calling gay adoption a form of discrimination against children. He's also known for being humble and valuing simplicity. So much so that instead of a chauffer in Argentina, he took the bus to work. He's also the first Pope with just one lung. He had one removed as a teenager, because of an infection.

Last week, students at Plano Senior High in Texas came to school as they usually did: with backpacks, books, lunches and sports equipment, but about 1000 of the high school's 1300 girls were without one thing most teenagers won't leave the house without: makeup. They called their 3 makeup free days 'Operation Beautiful' and wrapped it up on International Women's Day.
