CMA MUSIC FEST UNDERWAY
The CMA Music Festival is officially underway. There are dozens of live shows today through the weekend, as well as the big grand finale weekend, downtown. You can see who's playing, when and where, at CMAworld.com. Last year, more than 71-thousand people attended the festival. Bonnaroo is next week.
COUPLE OF HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST NIGHT'S CMT SHOW
Carrie Underwood took home the top prize, of video of the year, at last night's CMT awards, and it looks like Nicole Kidman's black dress and white shoes were the hit outfit of the night. As far as performances, Carrie sang with a choir from Christ Church -- who did a fabulous job, by the way -- and on Facebook people were raving about Little Big Town doing Fleetwood Mac's song, 'The Chain.' (See a clip of them doing the song here. It's not from the CMT show, but it's good.) Keith urban was there, too, jamming on guitar. Our buddy, Melinda Doolittle wrote on Facebook, "Little Big Town is the Truth!"
PARIS JACKSON POSSIBLE SUICIDE ATTEMPT
Michael Jackson’s 15 year-old daughter Paris is recovering after an apparent suicide attempt yesterday.... but friends say it's not the first time... they claim she also tried it when she was just 11, and had just seen her pop star dad pass away. She reportedly cut herself with a meat cleaver yesterday then called for help. The Jackson family says Paris is getting appropriate medical attention.
PHILLY BUILDING COLLAPSE
Six people were killed and 14 injured when a four-story building collapsed in Philadelphia yesterday. (Now, police are saying the contractor and crane operator who were tearing down the building have criminal records, including for theft and insurance fraud...though cops are not saying whether that's related.)
MORE GIRLS COME FORWARD AFTER RAPE CHARGES FILED AGAINST LOCAL COACH
More alleged victims of former Harpeth Hall Academy soccer coach George Laise have contacted Metro police, who now say that makes 5 girls who claim to have had sexual relationships with the 46 year old man. Laise, meanwhile, was taken to the hospital last night after reportedly trying to hang himself in his jail cell. He's expected to recover and be taken back to jail.
METRO PD GUN BUYBACK
Nashville Metro Police are hosting a gun buyback this Saturday, offering to swap you gift cards, hats and sporting event tickets for your handguns, rifles and shotguns. It'll happen at St. Luke Baptist Church, Saturday from 8 till noon.
NEW JOHNNY CASH STAMP
If you still use stamps, you'll have another option soon: a new Johnny Cash forever postage stamp that went on sale this week. Cash's son, John Carter, says the picture, taken in 1963, embodies his father's spirit and captures who he was. Cash died in 2003.
TROPICAL STORM ANDREA HITS FLORIDA
Tropical Storm Andrea is picking up strength as it heads toward Florida with extremely heavy rain and 60-mile-an-hour winds. Andrea is expected to hit the Florida Panhandle today.
PHILLY BUILDING COLLAPSE LATEST
A 14th survivor has been pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building in Philadelphia. Six people were killed when the four-story building that was being demolished, collapsed onto a thrift store. Workers kept digging into the night to rescue the others. (Now, police are saying the contractor and crane operator who were doing the job have criminal records, including for theft and insurance fraud.)
SEX OFFENDER ARRESTED AT MIDDLE SCHOOL
The sex offender registry has worked for at least some local kids. Mt. Juliet police say a GPS tracking device alerted cops that a registered sex offender -- who's not supposed to be anywhere NEAR children -- was on the grounds of West Wilson Middle School in Mt. Juliet, and kids were there at the time. Kenneth Thomas has been arrested.
NASHVILLE CHILDREN'S THEATRE PLEADS FOR DONATIONS
A local non-profit that serves kids is in trouble. The 82 year old Nashville Children's theatre says it's 70-thousand dollars short and that without that money camp scholarships and discounted tickets for more than eight-thousand children may have to go.
TSA BACKING OFF ON PROPOSAL TO CARRY KNIVES ON PLANES
After several months of protest calls and emails against it, the The Transportation Safety Administration -- or TSA -- is backing off the proposal to allow small knives on planes again. (TSA had said security screeners should focus on checking bags for explosives.)
CHILI FINGER LADY GOES BACK TO JAIL
The chili finger lady is back in jail. Anna Ayala was sent to prison for four years for sticking a severed finger into a bowl of chili then trying to scam the company out of big money. Now, her son, also a convict, accidentally shot himself in the ankle. Since he's not supposed to have a gun, she lied and told police two men did it. She and her son were found out, and Ayala is going back to prison.
