EMMY NOMINATIONS INCLUDE ONLINE SERIES
'House of Cards' makes Emmy history; 'American Horror Story' leads with 17 noms
Netflix's "House of Cards" made Emmy history Thursday with a top drama series nomination, the first time that television's leading awards have recognized a program delivered online as equal in quality to the best that TV has to offer.   The nomination, one of nine nods earned by the political thriller, is a marker in the unfolding revolution in how we get and watch video entertainment.

INTELLIGENT SURGICAL KNIFE FINDS CANCER
Scientists in England have developed what they call an "intelligent" surgical knife. The iKnife can tell the difference between healthy and cancerous tissue, by instantly analyzing the smoke that comes off the incision. Using it, doctors would be able to tell whether they've removed all the cancer before they finish the surgery, instead of having to wait and see. In the first test, the knife had 100 percent accuracy.

ROLLING STONE FACING MORE BACKLASH OVER MAG COVER
There's more fallout today over "Rolling Stone's" decision to feature Boston bombing suspect Dzokhar Tsarnaev [[ joe-HAR zar-NYE-ev ]] on its latest cover. CVS pharmacies, Walgreens, Kmart and Rite Aid all say they will not sell that issue in their stores.

OBAMA TO PROMOTE HEALTHCARE REFORM IN SPEECH TODAY
President Obama will promote the healthcare reform law in a White House speech today. He's expected to address the fact that the House has voted to delay the employer and individual mandates in the for a year.

SOME RELIEF IN SIGHT FOR HEAT WAVE
A killer heat wave brought the hottest weather of the summer to much of the nation Wednesday, and at least two more days of broiling temperatures are forecast before cooler weather slides in over the weekend.
About 130 million people are sweltering through the heat wave in the Midwest and Northeast this week, reports AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski

NEW EVENTS AT OPRYLAND FOR COUNTRY CHRISTMAS
In spite of the heat, the Opryland Hotel has started its Christmas decorations. Country Christmas starts in November, and has been ranked among the top 10 places in America to spend Christmas. (by USA TODAY and Travel Magazine. )

SOME METRO STUDENTS TO GET FRESH FRUITS, VEGGIES
Metro Nashville Schools is using more than 3 million dollars in federal money to buy fresh food for students from low-income families. The money will be given to 159 schools with the largest number of kids on the free and reduced-price lunch program. The students at participating schools will receive a fresh fruit or vegetable during the school day, at some point other than a regular meal. The program allows students to sample fresh produce they might not otherwise be able to access.
With the extra funding, kids might snack on anything from fresh broccoli and peppers to cauliflower and peaches.

And you may want to pick up a powerball ticket... after no winner Wednesday night, the jackpot for Saturday's drawing is an estimated 141-million dollars. 

WOMAN STABBED IN OPRY MILLS MALL PARKING LOT
A 40 year-old Williamson county woman was stabbed in the parking lot at Opry Mills yesterday afternoon. She says she was just sitting there, when a man opened the passenger side door, got in, stabbed her then drove away. Metro police believe it was an isolated incident and that there's no danger to other shoppers. The woman is recovering.

BLOOD DRIVE FRIDAY AT LP FIELD JULY 19
Blood donations fall drastically in the summertime, so local police, firefighters and sheriff's deputies are holding what they call the Battle of The Badges, to help. They have a friendly competition to see which group can rally the most blood donations for the Red Cross. The big drive is tomorrow, FRIDAY, 8 to 6, at LP Field.

RANDY TRAVIS' BROTHER ARRESTED
The brother of Randy Travis, 50-year-old David Traywick -- and his wife -- have been arrested for having a meth lab inside their home in North Carolina.  This is not the first time for him. Traywick was arrested last September for the same thing.  Randy Travis, meanwhile, is still hospitalized in Texas after a stroke and surgery.

EMMA ROBERTS ARRESTED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE 
She looks so cute and has such a squeaky clean image, but 22 year-old Actress Emma Roberts was arrested last week in Canada for domestic violance against her boyfriend, Evan. He didn't press charges so she was released. They say they're both working to get past it. Emma is the daughter of Eric Roberts, and Julia Roberts' niece.

GUY GETS EAR ATTACHED TO HIS ARM. NEXT, A MICROPHONE 
A 61-Year-old performance artist in Australia is REALLY dedicated to his art. The artist had a human ear grafted onto his forearm. He calls it an "augmentation of the body's form." Kind of like a woman getting breast implants. Next, Stelarc hopes to find a doctor who'll implant a MICROPHONE so other people can LISTEN to what the ear on his FOREARM hears! 

ELDERLY WOMAN REFUSES TO LISTEN TO ROBBER
An elderly woman recently took a straight forward approach to stopping a robbery at her grocery store -- she just said no. 96-year-old Margaretta Wolf refused to open the cash register for a mask-wearing man trying to rob her mom-and-pop store in Marshfield.  Wolf says she told him he could "have all the Tootsie Rolls" he wanted, but he wasn't getting anything in her register.  He hesitated a minute, then noticed there was a security camera in the corner, and finally fled. He did not take any Tootsie Rolls.

AMERICAN DAD SWITCHES TO TBS FOR ITS TENTH SEASON 
Seth McFarlane's "American Dad" is switching networks, leaving FOX for TBS, beginning next year. Believe it or not, that will be its 10th season.
