PILOT OF ASIANA AIRLINES PLANE WAS TRAINING
Officials investigating a jetliner crash in San Francisco have determined that Asiana Airlines Flight 214 was traveling “significantly below” the target speed during its approach and that the crew tried to abort the landing just before it smashed onto the runway. What they don’t yet know is whether the pilot’s inexperience with this type of aircraft and at this airport played a role. Two 16-year-old students from China were killed, 51 other people injured.

And two boys were rescued from the Manson Pike Dam yesterday, where they were swimming and the currents got too strong.

AT THE BOX OFFICE: "DESPICABLE ME 2" WINS
Tops at the box office this weekend: "Despicable Me 2." Johnny Depp's "The Lone Ranger" bombed. Way, way behind what they'd hoped for in ticket sales. It wasn't necessarily because the movie was bad, it was because the brand of "The Lone Ranger" didn't capture the attention of the younger audience. It was too old, being based on a Western that debuted on TV in 1949. 68% of the audience was over 25. The trouncing for Disney was especially painful because of the high cost of "The Lone Ranger," which reportedly cost at least $225 million to make. Made by the same team that created the lucrative Disney franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean" (the four film series that grossed $3.7 billion worldwide), the head of distribution for Disney said, "We thought it would appeal to a broader audience than it did."
