FLU MYTHS, AND TRUTHS, YOU NEED TO KNOW
Here are some flu myths that you may have heard your whole life, and may believe. Don’t fall for outdated information!
The reason some people still believe the myths is because some of them were ONCE true, but science has made great advances in flu vaccines. Here’s the latest:
First, you can NOT get the flu from the vaccine. Years ago, they used live virus but they don't any longer. Dr. Bill Schaffner with Vanderbilt School of Medicine says if you get the flu right after you’ve gotten the shot, that means you had already been exposed to flu, the vaccine didn't cause it. It can’t. Doctors use dead virus to make the vaccine so it can not give you the flu.
The CDC says everyone 6 months or older is supposed to get the vaccine, so the next myth concerns shots for babies and mercury-based Thimerosal.
The MYTH is that all flu vaccines contain the preservative. It’s not true.
There are now FIVE different flu vaccines, including one for babies, that’s free of Thimerosal.
There's also the regular flu shot, the flu-mist nasal spray, high-dose flu vaccine for senior adults, and a new intradermal flu shot, which means it's a needle so short you can hardly see it.
This is such an important health issue. So many people die from the flu, especially kids, that we've had our friends at Shots Etcetera help us put together a COLD AND FLU GUIDE, so you can read all about it.
PLEASE arm yourself with knowledge, tell your friends when you hear them spreading the myths, and get that flu vaccine. We want to have you with us for a long time!
