MACON OFFICIALS STOP ONE-MAN-CRIME-SPREE
A man was arrested in Macon County after sheriff's deputies discovered five truckloads of stolen items.
Ewing McMurtry is accused of more than 20 thefts of household items, pictures, bibles and lawn equipment from dozens of homes.
Deputies are now trying to connect recovered items with multiple reported thefts.
"We got something like 20 cases of thefts that have been recovered, possibly more," said Sheriff Mark Gammons.
Investigators say McMurtry was taking substantial amounts of scrap metal to Macon County Recycling two or three times a day, so they got suspicious. When deputies stopped McMurtry to speak with him, they found five truckloads of stolen items. One, was a cooler that one of the deputies recognized as being stolen from a friend of his. The thefts could likely go beyond Macon County. Authorities said it's possible counties such as Sumner, Smith and Trousedale could also be affected.
McMurtry is charged with aggravated burglary, criminal trespassing and multiple counts of theft over $1,000. More charges are pending.
